Top tips from Fishing for Schools coaches: September 2024

How much time and thought do you apply to the area where you coarse fish? Fishing for Schools Coach, Les Jones, shares his angling experience in this month’s top tip.

SAFETY AND COMFORT FIRST - ON THE LEVEL

One aspect of any type of fishing that is very important is the positioning of a seat box or chair, to ensure a comfortable and safe platform to fish.

If your chair or seat box has adjustable legs, make sure the legs are positioned correctly and that box or chair are level - this will enable you to fish without worrying about your box or chair tipping or wobbling. Un uneven box or seat will make you feel uncomfortable and unsafe which in turn will put pressure on your back or knees as you try to over compensate for the uneven setting especially if fishing with a pole.

If your seat box or chair does not have adjustable legs, then make sure you try to position on a level piece of bank side, some fisheries have platforms which are normally level and will help to make a day’s fishing more comfortable.

Make sure that rod rests or pole supports are positioned at a comfortable height, so that you don’t have over stretch to settle the rod or pole down.

Your landing net should be close by and in a position where you can safely reach it whilst playing and landing any fish. Again, if your box or seat are not level, this will cause all sorts of problems. The last thing you need is a hard fighting fish pulling one way and your seat going the other, this could result in a lost fish, broken tackle, or injury.

If you have a side tray or table, make sure that it is also positioned within easy reach. Have a disgorger, plummet, small scissors all at hand and any other accessories that you may need all reachable on the table or tray, along with whatever bait or ground bait you are using.

Make sure that the tackle that you are not using, such as rod bags, bait bags or other tackle bags are all positioned behind you, so that you don’t have to climb over them each time you need to leave your seat or box.

Safety and comfort are of the upmost importance, whichever aspect of our wonderful sport that you enjoy.

Tight lines,

Les.
